Matthew Johnson

May 7, 1922 — April 30, 2013

Matthew "Matt" H. Johnson, age 90, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Skaalen Home. Matt was born on May 7, 1922 in Stoughton, the son of Mathew and Hilda (Sandsmark) Johnson.

He attended Lakeside Grade School and graduated from Stoughton High School in 1940. While in high school, he participated in football and baseball. He played with the Green Bay Class E professional Blue Jays as a pitcher and later played for Stoughton and McFarland. Matt worked as a welder for Nelson Muffler & Highway Trailer. In 1942, he joined the Navy and spent time in Guam during WWII working in ship repair. For a while he farmed then started up his own welding shop which he ran for 33 years. After retiring in 1985, Matt delivered flowers for Stoughton Floral and also drove for Stoughton Cab. In 1972, he was united in marriage with Mary Dahl at First Lutheran Church.

Matt is survived by his daughter Julie Johnson of Edgerton; step-children Doug Dahl and Brenda Dahl of Stoughton; grandchildren, Guy Fay of Stoughton and Jennifer (Jon) Hoff of La Crosse; step-grandchildren Jeremy and Jessica and Curtis Dahl; great-grandchildren, Melissa and Matthew Hoff; step great-grandchildren Cameron and Jasmine Montiel. He is also survived by special "son" Dave (Barb) Kalland of Stoughton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (2012); brothers, Clayton and Clairmont and his parents.

Matt's family would like to thank the staff at Skaalen for the great care and concerns given to Matt and his family during his stay at Skaalen.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 3, 2013 at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 310 E. Washington St., Stoughton with Reverend Jerry Pribbenow officiating. A visitation will be held Thursday evening from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Friday at church one hour prior to service. Burial with military honors will be in Riverside Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at church.
