Matthew "Matt" Robert Berndt, age 33, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. He was born December 3, 1981 in Madison, son to Robert and Suzanne (Spicer) Berndt. Matthew was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann Schmitt on September 14, 2013 in Madison. He graduated from Sun Prairie High School in 2000 and then joined the Army National Guard, where he served as and Sergeant and crew chief in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. After his return from Iraq, Matt finished school at MATC and then attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. Matt enjoyed skating, reading and history. He was kind-hearted and a wonderful father to Owen. Matt is survived by his wife Elizabeth; son Owen; parents Robert and Suzanne Berndt; brother Erich and sisters Megan and Caitlin; cousin Mary Jane Kelley; and extended family. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Benjamin and Margaret Spicer and paternal grandparents Florence and Norman Berndt; aunt Beverly Berndt and uncle William Spicer. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00am, Monday, March 9, 2015 at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church, 221 Columbus Street in Sun Prairie with Father Steve Petrica presiding. Burial with full military honors will follow at Sacred Hearts Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 2:00pm until 5:00pm on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at Cress Funeral Home, 1310 Emerald Terrace in Sun Prairie and from 10:00am until time of mass at the church on Monday. The family would like to give special thanks to their special family, friends and the 147th Army Aviation.
