Mary Sherrod

Mary Lou (Rogers) Sherrod, 86, passed away on May 28, 2018 at Mesilla Valley Hospice in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She was born on August 15, 1931 to William Hayter and Mamie Winchell of Madison. Mary grew up in Madison where she attended Central High School. She later obtained her A.A. degree from Valley Community College in Los Angeles, CA.

In Madison Mary worked at Celon Company, St. Mary's Hospital, and as a surgical recovery nursing assistant at the VA Hospital. In 1977 she transferred to the VA in Los Angeles where she worked as a dental assistant and a training supervisor. Later on she worked as an independent insurance agent and finished her career as a youth group home
supervisor.

Mary married Bert Rogers in 1948 in Madison. They were married 32 years and raised 4 children in Madison and Oregon, WI. Mary loved nature and especially enjoyed water sports, camping, and flower/vegetable gardening. She also loved dancing and animals and adopted numerous strays. Her joy in taking care of others was evidenced by the numerous homeless people she brought into her home. In 2016 Mary moved to Las Cruces, NM to be closer to family.
Mary is survived by her former spouse, Bert Rogers, and her children: Toni Rogers (David Kuklenski) of Las Cruces, NM; Annette Rogers (David Goldsby) of Madison; Bert L Rogers (Sharon Blazier) of Deming, NM; and Harold Rogers (Joyce) of Madison.

She is also survived by her grandchildren: David J. Goldsby, Taylor Goldsby (Sandra), and Jenny Rogers all of Madison; and Casey Rogers (Lexi du Benard-Rogers) of Boulder, Colorado. She is also survived by several cousins and one great grandchild. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather Edward Schwenn of Waunakee, and her infant son Thomas Rogers.

Visitation will be held on 10-11:30 AM on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at Winn-Cress Funeral Home, 5785 Hwy Q, Waunakee, WI 53597. Burial at Town of Vienna Cemetery will follow visitation. Luncheon will follow burial services.
