Madison - Mary Ellen Latschar, 71, of Madison, Wisconsin died February, 21, 2014.She was born September 9, 1942 to the late Dr. Milton and Mrs. Alta Mae Latschar in Kansas. Mary Ellen graduated from Cartersville High School in 1960 and received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964 where she also enjoyed being a majorette who marched in the Macy's Day parade.
Mary Ellen spent a long and successful career in various mechanical and software engineering roles most recently at Kraft/General Foods in Madison and previously at the former Foxboro Corporation in Massachusetts. She worked, lived and travelled internationally. She enjoyed scuba diving, playing trombone in a Dixieland band, and created events and programs to encourage young people to consider science as a career.
After her recent retirement she was actively involved in several ventures applying engineering concepts to improving quality of life. Mary Ellen authored several chapters in various books as well as completing her own textbook, "Beginner's Guide to Engineering: Electrical Engineering". She assisted the local Lego chapter in reaching the state championships. She and her mother, Alta, were strong supporters of their neighborhood through events and activities. Mary Ellen was also the primary care giver for her mother for the last decade.
Mary Ellen is survived by her sister, Eloise Barron and husband Tim, and sister in law, Theresa Latschar, along with 3 nephews and 3 nieces, 9 great nephews and nieces and many lifelong friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to Rock Spring Elementary School

A private memorial for friends and family will be held at her former home in Madison from 3:00pm to 5:00pm on Saturday, May 10th.
