Mary Grady

Madison-Mary Hazel Grady, aged 91, of Madison passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at UW Hospital in Madison. She was born in Madison, Wisconsin on April 17, 1922 to Francis and Hazel (Bram) Grady. She attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison and received a bachelor's degree in history in 1944. Mary worked at UW-Extension as an accountant for many years. Mary was a lifelong resident of Madison and loved to regale her family and friends with stories of her life, our family, and Madison's past. She was a knowledgeable gemologist and traveled near and far with her sister, Kay, to gem and jewelry shows. Mary was very proud of her Irish roots, even getting a wee permanent reminder when she was 89 years old. We will miss her Irish wit and the twinkle in her eyes as she told stories. Mary had a rare gift of befriending anyone she met and learning from that person; she truly had a young soul. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Kay Grady and a brother, Edward Grady. She is survived by cousins, William (Pat) Grady of Belvidere, Illinois; Gene (Marge) Purcell of Fitchburg; Tom Grady of Oregon, Michael (Alice) Grady of Minneapolis; Alan (Joanne) Purcell of Naples, Florida; Bob (Mary) Grady, and De Ann Malloy; the younger generation of cousins: Maureen Purcell, Tom (Katie) Grady, Tammy (Ryan) Emmons, Joan (Brent) Gordon, Steve Grady and Theresa (Adam) Warden. Close friends: Betty Emmons of Portage, Pat Emmons of Portage, Mike McClain, Joanne Toay of Madison and many other cousins and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at UW Hospital's cardiac intensive care unit, palliative care team, and nursing staff for their kind and compassionate care.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 21, 2013 at 10am at CRESS FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICE, 3610 Speedway Road with Mrsg. Douglas L. Dushack officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the funeral service at Resurrection Cemetery.
