Mary Bogart

July 14, 1937 — November 18, 2013

Mary Katherine Top "Kathy" Bogart, 76, passed away Nov. 18 at her home in Madison. Kathy was the daughter of Mary Madden Top and Dr. Franklin H. Top, a prominent physician who led Detroit's Herman Kiefer Hospital during World War II. She grew up in the prestigious Boston-Edison neighborhood of Detroit during the peak of the city's postwar prosperity, a time when she dressed up to shop at the downtown Hudson's Department Store and attended formals at the luxurious Book Cadillac Hotel. Kathy graduated from college and earned a master's degree from the University of Iowa in special education before marrying a Turkish naval officer and living in Istanbul. Returning to the U.S., she raised two children, defeated cancer, and survived a painful divorce. She remarried and gave Frank Bogart the best ten years of his life before retiring to widowhood.

Kathy refused to learn the arts of social media but couldn't refuse a good book. She was one of the few who loved Welsh Rarebit and calling people just as they sat down on the toilet. Her happiest moments were caring for devoted companions Major, Stacy, Oliver, Muffin, Punkin, Chloe, and Jesse, Thadeus, and Shawna through her life.

Kathy was determined her daughter would have the chance to earn a medical degree and succeed as a physician. She is survived by Dr. Sherri Hansen, a Madison psychiatrist; David Hansen, an attorney and journalist, daughter-in-law Natalie Hansen, and grandchild Cadia Rose Hansen along with her brother Dr. Franklin Top Jr. and his wife Lois and their three children, Frank (Jeanie), Brian (Wendy), and Andrew (Amy). The family invites you to sing "The Old Rugged Cross" one last time at 11 a.m. Friday, November 22, 2013 at Coventry Village Sebring Chapel, 7707 N Brookline Drive, Madison. Donations in lieu of flowers (no gladiolas, please-she just hated them) may be made to the Dane County Humane Society.
