Martin “Marty” Quinlan Jr., age 63, of McFarland, WI passed away Saturday February 17, 2024 surrounded by his family following a brief illness. Marty was born on May 10, 1960 in Elkhorn, WI to Martin Quinlan Sr. and Carol (Berg) Quinlan. He was the oldest of 3 sons.

Marty spent most of his life growing up in McFarland, playing football & basketball with his brothers and the neighborhood kids and fishing and hunting with his dad, brothers, uncles and cousins.  He graduated McFarland High School in 1978 and worked for Robertson Masonry for a period of time, then the Wisconsin Historical Society for a brief while before starting at UW Hospital where he was employed for 34 years before his retirement on February 14, 2019 to spend time with his forever valentine, Carol Quinlan.

Marty and Carol (Helmle) Quinlan met on December 11, 1980 at the StoneHearth in Madison.  They were married May 1, 1982, which coincidentally happened to be opening day of fishing season and Marty made sure it was known that he had now caught the best catch of his life.  Marty & Carol had 2 children, Jennifer & Steven, that he claimed were his biggest accomplishments and he was so proud of them.

Marty spent most of his time fishing.  He loved being out on the lake in the early morning hours or late at night, up in the Boundary Waters on trips with his dad, brother Jeff, uncles, cousins and son, when he was old enough to go.  There were also annual summer family vacations to Minnesota to spend a week at the cabin, fishing, swimming, heading into town for the day and just spending time together as a family.  Marty was a huge sports fan, especially the Badgers.  He enjoyed watching, playing and most importantly coaching basketball, specifically for Steve throughout his childhood years.  He loved nothing more than his family and was beyond proud of his children and their successes and families they created, which brought him 3 grandchildren that he adored.

Marty leaves behind his wife of almost 42 years, Carol, children Jennifer (Chad) Haried and Steven (Ashley) Quinlan, three grandchildren, Emma Hall, Olin Haried and Jack Quinlan, brothers Jeff (Lisa) and Mike (Alice), brother-in-law Mike Helmle, sister-in-law Cindy Zsohar (Paul) and nieces and nephew along with other family and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Sr. and Carol and in-laws Evelyn and Arthur Helmle.

Funeral services will be at 11am on Wednesday, February 21st, 2024 at McFarland Lutheran Church, 5529 Marsh Road in McFarland. A visitation will be at 10am until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, Marty has requested donations to American Family Children’s Hospital in his name.

The family would like to send their sincere appreciation to the staff on Floor 8 of St. Mary’s Hospital for their compassionate care for Marty in his final days.
