Madison: Mark David Cohen, age 61, passed away Friday March 2, 2018 at UW Hospital in Madison. He was born October 13, 1956 in Teaneck, New Jersey, the son of Morris and Kathleen "Kay" (Shanahan) Cohen. Mark was a graduate of Teaneck High School, and later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he obtained his Master's Degree in Sociology. Loving education, Mark continued to learn: he obtained an Associate's Degree in Computer Programming from MATC, took numerous online and company courses, and was working on a degree in Education. Mark was a prolific writer. He completed a creative writing program in Texas, kept a multitude of journals, and had his poems published in literary magazines. Returning to his Jewish roots, Mark studied with Rabbi Renee Bauer of Jewish Social Services of Madison. Mark told Rabbi Bauer he wanted to learn Aramaic so he could study Talmud in its original format. Mark's interests and hobbies included listening to National Public Radio, reading the Wall Street Journal, and both playing and reading everything he could about the game of chess. Mark enjoyed memorizing chess openings and at one point participated in a chess club. He is survived by his beloved sister, Barbara Cohen Lyding of Champaign Illinois, and his beloved nephew Taylor Lucas Lyding also of Champaign, Illinois. Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Kathleen, "Kay" Cohen, and his grandparents Meyer and Bella Cohen.
