MADISON
Marilyn Murdock Schten, passed away peacefully, at age 88, on Sunday, March 18, 2018.
Lynn was born in Portland, ME on Jan. 4, 1930 to Lauretta and Willis Murdock. Her family moved to Barre, VT several years later. She graduated from the University of Vermont in 1952 and was employed as an elementary school teacher. In 1955, she moved to Aurora, CO where she taught for a year. She was an enthusiastic "natural".
She met husband-to-be Ed at UW-Madison summer school in 1956 and moved to Madison, where she taught for 3 years as Ed completed his doctorate. They were married in June, 1957. They moved to Lexington, Ky., where she taught for a year, then had son Karl in 1960. She had daughter Andrea in Milwaukee in 1962. Erik arrived in 1965 in Madison, where they made their permanent home.
She embraced several multi-year sojourns to South America and Africa, which foretold a happy participation in travel for many years, eventuating in visiting over 50 countries.
She delighted in knowing people and made friends everywhere she went. Very active, she loved to "try everything". She was a Christian who practiced her faith through direct action as well as through generous financial support. She was a member of the (moderately rebellious) Queen of Peace Community and St. Thomas Aquinas parish.
Hers and Ed's move to Oakwood brought contact with many new friends. She threw herself into and enjoyed the wide range of cultural and entertainment offerings there.
She and Ed visited nearly all the major art museums in the U.S. and many abroad. One of her real joys was being a docent at UW's Chazen Museum of Art. For a number of years she organized outings for docents to art museums in Chicago, Milwaukee and other cities. Lynn will be remembered as a great mom, a wonderful wife, and a very sweet friend.
She is survived by brothers Ronald Murdock and Philip Carroll, both of Vermont and their families husband Ed, children Karl, Andrea, and Erik and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am at the Oakwood Village University Woods Resurrection Chapel, 6201 Mineral Point Rd, Madison on Saturday, April 21, 2018. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Labre Indian School or the Oakwood Foundation.
Please share your memories.
