Marilyn Ann McCubbin, age 78, of Madison, WI passed away peacefully on March 1st, 2018 at St. Mary's Hospital. She was born on April 16, 1939 in Wahoo, NE, the daughter of August and Frances Behrens. Marilyn grew up on her parents' farm before earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Nebraska. While working at the University of Wisconsin Hospital as a head nurse she met an orderly named Hamilton ("Ham") over a bedpan. She married Hamilton I. McCubbin on November 1, 1963 in Madison, WI. While raising three wonderful children, Todd, Wendy and Laurie, Marilyn earned her Master's degree in Public Health, and was certified as a Nurse Practitioner. She went on to earn her PhD in Family Sciences from the University of Minnesota. Marilyn served as a professor at Gustavus Aldophus College. She earned her tenure and then became a full professor University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Nursing, from which she retired Emeritus. She then assumed a position as a professor at the University of Hawaii. She was a distinguished author and scientist, dedicating her research to families coping with children suffering from chronic illnesses. She also was a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. Marilyn was a warrior, surviving cancer and a long-term battle with Crohn's disease. Marilyn was an avid reader, news-watcher and most of all, Badger fan. She will be missed for her strength, wisdom, love, devotion and dry wit.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Hamilton; their three children Todd (wife, Jennifer), Wendy, and Laurie "Lali" (husband, Jason) and her five grandchildren Jessica, Rachel, Hunter, Lindsay and Malina; her sister Eleanor and her beloved dog, "Lani Girl". She will also be missed by family, friends and colleagues in Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Hawaii.
Friends, family, and colleagues are welcome to gather at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison on Sunday, March 4 from 12:00 - 1:00pm. A time of sharing memories will begin at 1:00pm. Burial in Forest Hill Cemetery will follow.
