Marie Down

Baraboo, WI/Brevard, NC - Marie M. Down, age 91, passed away on Monday, November 7, 2016, at Heritage Monona in Monona, WI. She was born on November 28, 1924, in Sauk County, WI the daughter of Arthur and Edith (Frazier) Mattke. Marie was educated in Baraboo and graduated from the Methodist Hospital Nursing School in Madison. During WWII she was also a member of the Nurses Cadet Corp.

Marie was united in marriage to Kenneth Down on August 14, 1948 in Baraboo, Wisconsin. They initially lived in Las Vegas, NV but moved to Baraboo to raise their family. Marie was a registered nurse and worked at several jobs including the Clark County Hospital in Las Vegas, St. Mary's Ringling Hospital in Baraboo, Olin Corporation at Badger Army Ammunition Plant, and for Sauk County Public Health.

After they retired, Marie and Kenneth moved to Brevard, NC, where she lived until 2012 when she returned to Wisconsin. During her time in Brevard she made many friends in her neighborhood and was part of a caring church community at the Brevard Wesleyan Church.

Marie is survived by her children, David (Bonnie Brooker) Down, Marcia (Michael) Jones and Janis (Albyn) Roman; grandchildren, Heather (Tom), Kyla (Peter), Albyn II (Tonya) and Jennie (Joe), nine great-grandchildren, nieces Sharon (Duane) and Beth (Jeff), and their children and grandchildren.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Kenneth, a brother, Robert, and sister-in-law, Jeanette.

Private family services were held.
