Margaret Crittenden

June 25, 1933 — June 8, 2014

Margaret Hillhouse Crittenden, 80, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2014. She was born on June 25,1933 in Minneapolis, MN to James Theodore and Mildred Lambert Hillhouse. She was married June 13, 1959, in Washington, DC to Lyman Butler Crittenden. Lyman and Margaret met while they were both working at the National Institutes of Health.

Margaret and Lyman were partners in so many aspects of their lives, starting with their shared interest in science and math, their early days sailing and camping, then raising their family and sharing their interests in gardening, camping, traveling, sailing and reading with their children and grandchildren. As they aged, they grew into complementary roles, helping each other to live their lives to the fullest.

Margaret enjoyed volunteering at church, elementary schools, nursing homes and in the community. She also enjoyed curling up with a good book on the couch with her dogs and cats. Margaret truly enjoyed her grandchildren and always looked forward to their visits, their dress-ups and games, and to attending their activities. We all have many fond memories of visits filled with fun and laughter.

Margaret received her Bachelor's Degree from Smith College, in 1954; and her Master's in Biostatistics from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health in 1956. Margaret worked as a Biostatistician for the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD 1956-1961;and the Michigan Department of Public Health, in Lansing, MI from 1976-1984

Margaret is predeceased by Lyman, her husband of 53 years and her great grandson, Iain. She is survived by her daughters Sarah (Alex) and Jan (Larry), her grandchildren, Hannah, Eva, Phillip (JoCasta), Jillian (Erich) and Hillary (Ardian) and great grandchildren, Phelan, Joseph and Deaglan. She is also survived by her sister Anne Hillhouse Thirsten and many nieces and nephews.
