August 10, 1926 – December 2, 2023
Middleton, WI – Malcolm Hart Crump (Mac), age 97, of Middleton, WI, passed away on December 2, 2023.
Mac was born in Culpeper, VA, the only child to the late Malcolm Hugh Crump and Mary Aylor Crump. Mac was raised on a farm just outside of Culpeper. Before graduating from Culpeper High School, Mac enlisted in the US Navy in 1944 at the age of 17 during the height of WWII. He served on the USS Antietam Essex-class aircraft carrier as a helmsman in the Pacific Ocean. After the war, he attended Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA. He then attended and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, VA with a BS degree in Soil Science, 1951. While a student, he went on a blind date with Janet Anderson who was teaching music at Marion College in Marion, VA. Mac and Janet were married in 1952. Mac took a sales/consulting job with American Cyanamid and traveled the Mid-Atlantic states. During this time, Eric, a son was born in 1953. Always intent on learning, they moved to Athens, GA where he attended and graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia with a DVM degree (1958) A second son, Peter, was born in 1956. The lure of more education took them to Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK and then finally on to Madison, WI. Mac graduated with a MS (1961) and a PhD (1965) in Veterinary Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While in Madison, another son, Mark, was born in 1960.
Mac joined the faculty of Iowa State University, Ames IA, in the Veterinary Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology Department in the Veterinary School, in 1964. He taught a course on physiology to all the second year students. It was in Ames where Mac and Janet bought their first and only house on Bel Air Circle. Mac retired from teaching in 1997 and later moved to Middleton, WI in 2008.
Even though Janet had all the Norwegian blood, Mac embraced her heritage as if it were his own. They raised four Norwegian Elkhounds (Thor, Heidi, Gigi and Christina). They very much enjoyed visiting Norway and talking about all things Norwegian. He never needed any prodding to visit his children and grandchildren. His grandchildren affectionately called him ‘Baba’, and soon everyone was calling him by that name. He particularly liked returning to Madison and visiting Picnic Point and the Memorial Union Terrace, reliving memories from their five years living in Eagle Heights student housing.
Mac is survived by his children, Eric Crump of Gettysburg, PA, Peter (Lisa Davis) Crump of Middleton, WI, Mark (Kim) Crump of Clovis, CA. His grandchildren include Jennifer Crump of New York City, NY, Johanna Crump of Middleton, WI, Ashley Crump of San Francisco and Amber Crump of Clovis, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents Malcolm and Mary and his wife Janet.
