Mae Hoyum

Mae A. Hoyum, 93 of Middleton, formerly of Iron Mountain, Michigan passed away at her daughter's home surrounded by her daughter and grandchildren on May 14, 2012 from Alzheimer's.

She was born on July 5, 1918 in Waucedah, Michigan, the daughter of the late Henry and Julia (Valentine) Lutherius. She was born and raised in Waucedah, she married Leonard O. Hoyum on September 21, 1940 in Detroit, MI. The couple lived in Detroit, Norway, Kingsford and Iron Mountain, MI. Leonard preceded Mae in death on September 4, 1997. Mae was employed with General Control of Kingsford Veterans Hospital in 1960. Mae and Leonard purchased their first restaurant, the M&J in Kingsford; from then on, they, along with their children, were involved in numerous restaurants in the area, including: Ace Drug Store lunch counter in Iron Mountain, Dinner Bell in Iron River, Stables in Iron Mountain, Hollywood Supper Club in Spread Eagle, and the San-Van restaurant in Iron Mountain. Mae enjoyed cooking and did all the main cooking at the Stables; she was a great Italian cook and made all the homemade soups. In Mae's spare time she bowled and in the 1980's she bowled on national television. She golfed with her husband and in her later years played Cribbage three times a week at the senior center in Iron Mountain. In 2007, Mae moved to Middleton to live with her daughter.

Mae is survived by her daughter, Sharron Meysembourg of Middleton; three grandchildren, Kevin Noran of Denver, CO, Faith Van Goethem and Jon Van Goethem of Middleton; two great-grandchildren, Wyatt Wagner and Yuri Van Goethem of Middleton; also many nieces and nephews. Mae was preceded in death by her son, Leonard "Butch" Hoyum, Jr.; brother, Leo Lutherius; and two sisters, June Lemke and Elaine Bradley of Racine.

Upon Mae's wishes, there will be no services. Mae's ashes will be buried at Norway Cemetery. The family has entrusted the Cress Funeral Home of Middleton.
