Obituary

Lucy Barman

January 16, 1931 — June 12, 2026

Waunakee

Lucy Barman, age 95, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2026.

She was born on the family farm in the town of Middleton to parents, John and Caroline (Schroeder) Kalscheuer, on January 16, 1931, in a house without electricity, running water, or indoor plumbing. She graduated from Middleton High School in 1949 in a class of 43. On April 29, 1952, she married a farmer, Alfred Barman. She was a stay-at-home mom raising their 7 children and helping with the farmwork. After 25 years of working side by side with her husband on the farm, they divorced. She then worked at St. Benedict Center and the WI Dept. of Transportation, retiring in 1996.

Lucy was a 15-gallon blood donor and volunteered at the American Red Cross, Waunakee Manor, and St. John’s baptism program, where she crocheted many, many afghans for babies to be baptized. She also volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital, where she joined the knitters and crocheting program. She crocheted over 7000 baby hats for the newborn babies and over 1000 prayer shawls for the very ill patients. She crocheted practically every day in her retirement years.

She was an avid card player, learning to play 500 in second grade. She also played euchre and solo. She liked traveling, gardening (especially flowers), house plants, sewing, reading the daily newspaper, listening to country and polka music, and watching her favorite TV channel, RFD.

Lucy is survived by her seven children, Sue (Jim) Campbell, Middleton, Theresa (Tom) Christen, Waunakee, Carolyn “Carrie” (Roger) Graff, Madison, Dennis (Janis) Barman, Waunakee, Annette (Randy) Hillebrand, Sun Prairie, Ron (Chris) Barman, Waunakee, and Julie (Hank) Christensen, Oregon, WI.

She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, Jonathan and Kevin Campbell, Tyler (Marie) Christen, Travis (Missy) Christen, Michelle (Max) Reshel, Crystal Graff, Jason (Andrea) Barman, Dustin (Tyler Ratkowski) Barman, Elya (Joseph) Butner, Jeremiah (Christy) Hillebrand, Luke and Tabitha Hillebrand, Tim (Ashley) Barman, Kyle (Natalie) Barman, Rachel (Van) Corey, Hayley (Caleb) Hasty, and Davis Christensen; 2 step-grandchildren, Andy and Luke Miller; 13 great-grandchildren plus another one on the way; and 6 step-great-grandchildren. Lucy is also survived by two sisters, Jane Poelma and Alice (Frank) Tangney.

She was preceded in death by daughter-in-law Monica Barman; grandson Trent Christen; sisters and in-laws, Marcy (Joe) Kopp and Virginia (Linus) Kuehn, Ted Poelma, and ex-husband Alfred.

Lucy lived a full life and enjoyed all the pleasures the world had to offer. She was so PROUD of her family and will be sorely missed. May she rest in the eternal happiness of heaven.
