Lucas “Luke” John Tonstad, age 32, of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away on November 7, 2025, at UW Hospital in Madison after a tough battle against a rare illness.
Luke was born on July 30, 1993, in Madison, Wisconsin, to Rick and Judy Tonstad. He loved being with family and friends, all of whom cherished his humor, kindness, and generous spirit.
Luke is survived by his loving wife, Genna; his parents, Rick and Judy Tonstad; his brother, Jacob (Maddy); and his beloved nieces, Thea, Rose, and Penny and his mother-in-law, Sheila Meyer. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends who loved him deeply.
Luke earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and a certificate in Data Science. He was employed at UW–Madison at the time of his passing.
In 2019, Luke and Genna moved to Denver, Colorado, where they spent four wonderful years exploring the outdoors. They were married in the mountains at Twin Lakes on October 15, 2022 on their 10 year anniversary, surrounded by close family and friends. In August 2023, they returned to Wisconsin to be near their loved ones.
Luke loved being outdoors—whether hiking with dogs, playing disc golf and basketball, or sitting around a campfire with friends and family with a cold beer in hand. His sense of humor, warmth, and loyalty touched everyone he met.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Luke was truly loved by all.
A celebration of Luke’s life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers or memorials, all we ask is you consider donating blood as you never know who may need it.
We welcome you to share your thoughts and memories on Lucas' tribute wall.
