Lowell Corwin Jr.

November 6, 1943 — July 8, 2022

Middleton

MIDDLETON, WI – Lowell (Buster to family, Red to friends and colleagues) passed away peacefully on July 8, 2022, in Waunakee, WI. from pancreatic cancer.

Born on November 6, 1943, in Newark, NJ, he was the son of Lowell and June (Gondrezick) Corwin.  After World War II, his family resided in Tomah, WI for approximately 5 years before moving to West Allis, WI.  Lowell graduated from Nathan Hale High school in 1961.  He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Carroll College in Waukesha, WI, in 1965 where he met Virginia Hoffman, his wife for 55 years.  In 1971 he earned a Master’s Degree in History and Education from UW-Milwaukee.

Red loved teaching others, especially young adults and immigrants.  He taught classes in History, Psychology and Contemporary Living at Whitnall High School in Hales Corners, WI for over 32 years.  Three of those years he also did drug and alcohol counseling with students and their families.  After retiring from Whitnall, he volunteered for 12 years at Waukesha County Technical College tutoring immigrants in the ESL (English as a second language) lab and teaching the Citizenship class.

Red was a member of North Ridge Church in Waunakee, WI.  Red was a friend of Bill W. and as part of his recovery program, he helped many others, including his students, throughout his 41 years of sobriety.  He had extensive knowledge of religion and history, including a special interest in World War II.  He also enjoyed photography; wood working, both refinishing and making furniture; landscaping; reading and traveling.  His travels to Europe, the Middle East and Eastern Europe were especially rewarding when he visited former exchange students and their families.

Red is survived by his wife, Virginia (Ginny); son Sean, granddaughter Kaitlyn and grandson Kyle of Erie, CO; niece Jennifer (Knutson) Somppi of Milwaukee; and nephew Andrew Knutson of Spring Green, WI.

Red is preceded in death by his mother, June (Gondrezick) Corwin in 1986; father Lowell Corwin Sr in 2009, sister Regina (Corwin) Knutson in 2001 and brother-in-law Robert Knutson in 2022.
