Obituary

Louise Frederick Watson, age 96, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, following a brief illness.

Born on October 1, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, Louise moved with her family to Madison, Wisconsin, at the age of six, where her lifelong love of languages and curiosity about the world began to flourish.

She attended Wisconsin High School, where her exceptional talent for languages earned her the prestigious National Medal of France. Louise went on to study at the University of Wisconsin, graduating with a degree in education and becoming a proud member of Chi Omega Sorority.

Louise devoted her career to education, teaching German, French, and Spanish at several Madison-area high schools. Her commitment to language learning and cultural understanding reached beyond the classroom when she founded the language exchange program at Oregon High School, opening doors for students to connect with people and cultures around the world.

While building a meaningful career, Louise also built a loving family with her husband, James S. Watson, with whom she shared 52 years of marriage. Together they created a home centered on love, learning, and connection. She was the devoted mother of four children, cherished grandmother of ten grandchildren, and proud great-grandmother of nineteen great-grandchildren.

Louise’s passion for languages naturally extended into her personal life as an avid traveler and lifelong student of world cultures. She especially treasured traveling throughout Europe with family and friends, embracing each journey with enthusiasm and grace as she explored historic cities, experienced new cultures, and practiced the languages she loved.

At home, Louise found joy in playing the piano and spending treasured time with those closest to her. Her family will remember her gentle spirit, quiet wit, and unwavering sense of fairness, as well as the kindness, intelligence, and dignity that left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Louise’s legacy lives on through the countless students she inspired, the family she adored, and the values of compassion, curiosity, and fairness that guided her life. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband, James; her daughter Carla Gierke; her son, Mark Watson; and her brother, Howard Frederick.

Louise is survived by her brother, Tom Frederick; and by two of her four children, James S. Watson III, MD (Anne C. Rifleman), Elizabeth Louise (Beth and Dave) Roloff, as well as all of her 10 grandchildren, Ellen Fox, Karin Zuegge MD, Lisa (Jon) Netzler, Bradley (Amanda) Watson, Jessica Watson MD, Emily Watson, James S. Watson IV, Julia Watson MD, Erik (Maggie) Roloff, James (Emaleah) Roloff, and nineteen great-grandchildren.

There will be a private graveside service at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
