Liniel Cooper

Liniel H. Cooper, age 92 passed away after a brief illness at the Skaalen Home in Stoughton on Sunday, August 12, 2012.
He was born on July 3, 1920 in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas to Robert and Allie (Walker) Cooper. He graduated from Davis High School, Davis Oklahoma in 1940. He entered the U.S. Army upon graduation, serving 41 years of both active and reserve duty. He retired after achieving rank of full Colonel. He met Ruth A. Mellum, an Army nurse, while hospitalized at Fort Sheridan near Chicago, Illinois. They were married September 21, 1946. "Coop" was a master plumber in Stoughton for many years. He took an active part in his community serving on the Stoughton School Board for five years. He was Mayor of the City of Stoughton for twenty years. He served on the advisory Board of Directors of First Federal Savings and Loan of Stoughton and other banking institutions. He was a 32nd degree Mason, taking great pride in Masonry and Mandt Lodge #73 of Stoughton. He was selected for membership to the Stoughton Hall of Fame in 1997.
He is survived by his daughter Linda (Dennis) Ylvisaker; granddaughter, Sarah L. (Luke) Johnson and their son Hunter. He is further survived by his Grandson Andrew D. (Janna) Ylvisaker and their son Braeden; one sister, Robbie D. Morgan of Oklahoma City as well as many, many, friends and acquaintances of the Stoughton Community. He is also survived by his loving companion of ten years, Phyllis Gessler. "Coop" was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth A. Mellum Cooper on February 4, 1999 and by his parents and one sister. Funeral services will be held at noon at The Stoughton United Methodist Church, 525 Lincoln Ave, with the Rev. Dr. Dawn Jeffers Ramstad on Wednesday, August 15, 2012. The family will greet friends at church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at 12:00 P.M. Military rites and luncheon will take place at church, and internment will follow at Riverside Cemetery of Stoughton.
