Liliana Birukova, age 87, died peacefully on Saturday, October 1st, 2016, in her home in Madison, WI, in the arms of her loving daughter. Liliana was born on September 17th, 1929, in Moscow, Russia, the daughter of Boris and Vera Birukov (Rosovsky). Liliana is an alumna of the Moscow Aviation Institute, National Research University. Liliana married Dr. Alexander "Shura" Sternberg in 1954 and had a son, Sasha, in 1955 and a daughter, Julia, in 1959. In 1994 Liliana, together with her late husband, immigrated to the United States to join their family in Madison, WI. In her life Liliana embraced the pacifistic tenets of the Dukhobor movement and considered herself a Tolstoyan, inspired by her grandfather, Pavel Birukov, who was a confidant and biographer of the great Russian author.
Liliana is survived by her daughter, Julia (Alexander) Krichevsky; her daughter-in-law Helen Sternberg; her grandchildren, Alina (Judah) Viola, Boris Krichevsky, Pasha Sternberg and Luba (Aaron) Kats; her great grandchildren, Liya and Ellie Viola, and extended family worldwide. Liliana was preceded in death by her husband, Shura and her son, Sasha. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 4th, 2016 from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM at the CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Rd, Madison. An open house will follow in Liliana's home.
