L.H. Schultz

MADISON - L.H. "Bud" Schultz, died on Friday, December 7, 2012, at Oakwood Village-University Woods. He was 93 years old.
Loris Henry "Bud" Schultz was born February 9, 1919 in Mondovi, Wisconsin and raised on a dairy farm nearby. He attended a one-room country school and Mondovi High School, graduating as valedictorian in 1936, and entering the University of Wisconsin, Madison in the fall. He dropped out of college for one year to work as a herdsman in the Borden Dairy World of Tomorrow exhibit at the 1939 New York World's Fair, where 150 dairy cows were milked in the first rotary milking parlor. At that exhibit he was involved in the selection and care of the first Elsie the Cow. He graduated from the College of Agriculture in 1941, receiving the Steenbock Award as the outstanding graduate. He was a member of the honorary societies Alpha Zeta and Phi Kappa Phi and lived at Babcock House, the former home of Stephen M. Babcock. He received the M.S. degree in Dairy Physiology at the University of Minnesota in 1942.
From 1943 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Navy as an officer aboard the destroyer USS Meade (DD602), earning 5 battle stars, and retiring as a Lieutenant Senior Grade. In 1946 he returned to the University of Wisconsin at Madison and received the PhD in Dairy Science-Biochemistry in 1949. On May 28, 1949 he was married to Elmira Baumann in Rib Falls, Wisconsin. From 1949 to 1957 he was on the staff of the Animal Science Department of Cornell University, becoming a full professor in 1955. In 1957 he returned to the University of Wisconsin as Professor of Dairy Science, where he served until his retirement in 1985.
His professional activities included serving the American Dairy Science Association as a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Dairy Science, and on the Board of Directors, (President in 1983, Treasurer from 1983-86). On the Mastitis Council he served on the Research Committee, and on the Board of Directors, and was President in 1980. As a member of the National Research Council he served on the Animal Nutrition Committee, as well as the sub-committee which prepared the 1978 revision of the Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Animals.
Special awards included the Caleb Dorr Fellowship at the University of Minnesota (1942) the All University Fellowship at UW (1946-1949), American Feed Manufacturers Nutrition Research Award (1973), Moorman Travel Award to observe overseas research (1975), West Agro Award for rearch on Mastitis and Milk Quality (1980), and Award of Honor from The American Dairy Science Association (1989). In 1997 he was made a fellow of that organization. In 1975 he gave invited papers at the International Dairy Federation conferences at Reading, England and at the 10th International Nutrition Congress in Kyoto, Japan. He received National Dairy Shrine Award in 2003. In 2006 he was elected to the Hall of Fame of Mondovi High School.
His areas of scientific research included metabolic disorders of dairy cattle, nutritional effects on milk composition, physiology of lactation, mastitis, and dairy herd management. He played a key role in developing programs for the prevention and treatment of ketosis and procedures for somatic cell testing of the milk of individual cows to monitor mastitis. He was the author or co-author of over 100 scientific papers and numerous abstracts and trade articles, plus chapters in four books. He served as major professor for 62 graduate students who received graduate degrees under his direction at Cornell and Wisconsin, nineteen became professors. Over a period of 35 years he taught hundreds of students in courses in dairy herd management, physiology of lactation and dairy nutrition.
He was an active member of Midvale Community Lutheran Church, serving on the Church Council and as chairman of the Youth and Buildings and Grounds Committee. He was also a member of the Oakwood Lutheran Homes Grounds Committee, the Madison West Kiwanis Club, and the Middleton Couples Golf League.
At the University of Wisconsin he served on the faculty senate and the Biological Division Committee which approved promotions. In the School of Agriculture he was on the Dean's Advisory and Scholastic Policies and Actions Committees. He was the Chairman of the Building Committee for the new Animal Science Building. In 2009 he was author of a book on the History of the Dairy Science Department published by the University of Wisconsin Foundation.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Evelyn. He is survived by his wife Myra, and sons Steven (Nancy), Mark (Leanne), David (Helen), and brother Gary (Jean). He has four grandchildren Sara, Rachel, Will and Eric Schultz.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at MIDVALE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4329 Tokay Boulevard, Madison, with the Rev. Bruce Loewenhagen officiating. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may made to Oakwood Village and Midvale Lutheran Church.
