Lexie Schoen

October 12, 1935 — October 3, 2017

Madison: Lexie was born on October 12th,1935 to Glenn Clark Hill Jr. and Lexie Craig Hill in St. Louis, Missouri as the younger sister of Carol "Big" Hill. Athletic, adventurous and outgoing, Lexie spent a good amount of time in her youth enjoying the outdoors at camp, on the Current River and at the family farm. One core skill was canoeing, always steering from the back! She was an outstanding athlete at John Burroughs High School, lettering in hockey, softball, tennis, and swimming and serving as a lifeguard.

After high school, Lexie first attended the UW Madison her freshman year before graduating from Washington University in St. Louis. Planning for a career in Physical Education, she had the good fortune that her uncle Albert Gordon Hill (on NATO assignment in Europe) was in a position to sponsor her coming to The Netherlands in 1957, where the American School in The Hague (ASH) was just being launched. She was both the first American and the first PE teacher, as well as the longest serving teacher at the school with 41 years of service.

While living in The Hague, Lexie met Dutch architectural engineering student Nico Schoen in 1958 and they married in 1960. Twin daughters Kim and Annette arrived in 1961, and son Glenn in 1963. A prolonged and fulfilling period followed centered around family, teaching P.E. at ASH, an avid social life, travel and her volunteer work at international school sporting events. This included regular trips to family in the US, ensuring a strong Dutch-American connection. Even though they were 8 years apart in age and had an ocean between them, Lexie and her beloved sister Big were as close as sisters could be and, together with Nico and brother in law George, formed the foundation of a loving family.

After raising her children in the Netherlands, Lexie and Nico continued right on enjoying friends and family gatherings while fully engaging their love and appreciation for the arts, culture and travel. The Dutch chapter started drawing to a close in the late 1990s when Nico became ill and passed away in 1998.

Two years after Nico's death, Lexie returned to the United States to start life anew and be nearer to her children and grandchildren. She settled in Madison, where she swiftly built up a new circle of life on Tamerack Trails around friends old and new, her book club, the Dutch Club, her beloved swimming pool and, most importantly, her family.

In the closing chapter of her life, Lexie greatly enjoyed her four years as a resident at Oakwood Village Assisted Living, making new friends and appreciating all the wonderful staff. Rounding out an active, adventurous and social life in peace, Lexie passed away in the presence of her family on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017 at Agrace Hospice Care in Madison, WI. Much beloved, with a wonderful sense of humor and an inspiration to many, she will be greatly missed.

Lexie is survived by her twin daughters Kim (Jay, Sky and Grace), Annette (Dan, Lexie and Spencer), son Glenn (Sharon, Kate and Emily), and brother in law George Timson (Ben, Glenn, Lexie, George, Laura, Jon).
