Leroy "Skip" Berigan

Madison

Leroy “Skip” Berigan, age 90, peacefully passed away on March 6, 2024, with his wife of 69 years, Jeanne, by his side.  Skip was born on May 23, 1933, at St. Mary’s hospital and was the son of LeRoy and Berniece Berigan. Skip lived most of his life in Madison, Wisconsin and was a loyal Badger fan. To his family, Skip was the keeper of the trivia about the west side of Madison and would regale them with stories about his childhood, such as getting up early to go golfing at Nakoma, riding horses at Corcoran Stables and playing baseball for Pertzborn Plumbing.

Skip and his wife Jeanne each graduated from Edgewood High School in 1951. Skip was an athlete who played varsity basketball and golf. He remained an excellent golfer into his 80s. After high school Skip attended St. Norbert College in De Pere Wisconsin, where he was in the Army ROTC and after graduation completed his active service at Fort Knox in Kentucky. He and Jeanne were married on June 5, 1954, and spent their lives raising their family and doting on their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Skip was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish for his entire life. He was one of the first altar servers, and he and Jeanne were very active with the Parish and the school. Skip was a pack leader for the Parish’s Cub Scout pack 15, served on the Parish council and as an usher for many years. He also was a basketball coach for Queen of Peace, coaching boys 6th and 7th grades, and ran the Madison Diocesan basketball tournament for several years.

Skip was always a faithful supporter of Edgewood High School. Both before, during and after his 6 children attended Edgewood, you would often see him at basketball and football games.  Skip and Jeanne chaired many events at the Edgewood fundraising festival, Edgefest, including the teen dance held at the College Gym. In their retirement Skip and Jeanne both worked for the UW Medical and Pharmacy schools where they helped train upcoming doctors and pharmacists by being standardized patients.

Skip was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Georgia and Mary Rogers (Don). He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jeanne Berigan (Tierney), his sister Margaret McKinley (Dennis), his six children, Patrick (Anita), Brian (Kathy), Bridget, James (Cindy), Nora (Aaron Sarbacker), Maureen, 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Skip was a beloved husband and father to his wife and children. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was “Papa.”

Services will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 401 South Owen Dr, on Wednesday March 13, 2024, with visitation beginning at 9:30 am and funeral Mass to follow at 11 am. The family suggests memorials be made to Edgewood High School or Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish.

Skip’s family would like to thank the staff at Agrace Hospice especially Lexee who helped us through this hard time and the staff at Nazareth House in Stoughton for taking such good care of him.
