Kathryn J. Shug

Kathryn J Shug, age 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by her beloved family on Monday, December 15, 2025, at Oakwood East Village with hospice care provided by Agrace, in Madison, WI. She was born on March 7, 1931, to William “Bill” and Frances (Hendrickson) Snyder in Davison county, SD. Kathy, as she was known by those close to her, attended Mitchel High School in SD prior to obtaining a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota as a Medical Technician. Later, she would work in Cancer Research at the University of Madison where she would meet her beloved husband Austin. Kathy was married to Dr. Austin L. Shug on September 26, 1955. Kathy was an avid traveler, community leader, investor in the educational arts for future generations and devoted member of her church at Queen of Peace Community group. Her bright smile, warm personality, stories and ability to light up a room with her presence will be sorely missed by all of her family, friends and many others whose lives were touched by Kathy’s light.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Dr. Austin L. Shug, daughter Mary Shug and her brother William Phillip H. (Virginia) Snyder . She is survived by her children, Barbara Schug-Studener and Dr. Leo A. (Jane) Schug; her grandchildren, Max Studener (Jennifer), Katelyn Studener (Freddy Machado), and Austin & Julia Schug; his great-grandchildren, Luna Machado Studener, Olivia & Maddox Studener; her cousin, Lisa O’Sullivan and her nephew Bill Snyder and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, on Monday, December 29, 2025. The visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. followed by the funeral service at 1:oo p.m. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison.
