STOUGHTON – Kathryn Elsie Nyhof, age 85, went home to the Lord on November 14, 2024. Kathy was born in Edgerton, Minnesota on March 29, 1939, the youngest of the four children of George and Alice (Eernisse) Westenberg. She met Calvin Nyhof while attending Northwestern College in Orange City, IA, where she earned a BA degree in Education.
Kathy and Cal were married on August 13, 1964, in Edgerton, MN, then moved to Dulce, New Mexico, where they both taught on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation. While in New Mexico, their two daughters, Kerri and Connie, were born. Kathy took a break from classroom teaching to spend time educating their daughters. After living in Maple Lake, MN and Menomonie, MI, they settled in West Bend, WI, where Kathy resumed her teaching career. She taught at Ye Olde School, at Cedar Lake Homes in West Bend, educating children from all over about school in a one-room classroom. She retired in 2000 but continued to work part-time in education. Kathy and Cal moved to Stoughton, WI, in 2015.
Kathy was a sincere believer. She was very active in the churches that she attended, making banners, playing piano, teaching the children, and attending bible studies. Upon retirement, Cal & Kathy traveled around the world, usually spending a portion of each trip volunteering with Youth With A Mission (YWAM).
Kathy made everyone feel special. She sent care packages on holidays, sent cards and letters to many, and reminded those that she saw that they were wonderful just the way they were. She sewed special outfits for her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Kathy made life-long friendships in all the places she lived – from her childhood home in Edgerton, MN, to her college friends at Northwestern College in Iowa, and all places she lived afterwards. She was greatly loved by many people.
Kathy loved adventures. She planned many road trips for her family and later planned many international trips with Cal. One of her simple pleasures was a drive in the country on a sunny afternoon.
Kathy was preceded in death by her husband Cal, her parents, her siblings Gertrude, Abe (late Lydia), Wes (late Marianne) and her siblings-in-law Brendine Nyhof, John Wurpts, Rev. Harlan Nyhof, and Rolyn Nyhof. She is survived by her two daughters, Kerri Nyhof (Eric Niksch), and Connie (Ben) Weisse, two grandchildren, Mikaela Weisse (Daniel Johnson) and Jonah Weisse, her great-granddaughter Vivian Weisse, her siblings-in-law Verla (Rev. Wayne) Joosse, Diane Nyhof, Gordon Nyhof (Rachel Cain-Nyhof), Rosie Wurpts, and numerous members of her extended family.
