Karole Anne Leadholm

February 28, 1938 – July 9, 2026

After a year-long battle with cancer, Karole Anne Leadholm passed away peacefully at Agrace Hospice Center in the early morning hours of July 9, 2026. She was 88.

Karole was youthful, spirited, and full of life. It seemed as though nothing could stop her—and for more than 88 years, nothing did. Even while fighting cancer, she rallied to attend her oldest grandchild’s wedding just weeks before her death and continued to welcome and entertain visitors in the hospital until her final days.

Born in Chicago to John and Amelia Ahsmann, Karole was one of seven children. She graduated from Lakeview High School, where she formed many lifelong friendships.

Karole earned her nursing degree from Augustana Nursing School in Chicago. Soon afterward, while working at Great Lakes Naval Hospital, she met Steve Leadholm, her future husband. They were married for 64 years until his death in 2024. In 1960, they moved to Madison, where they built a life together raising their two sons, enjoying the company of many friends, and cheering on the Badgers at football and basketball games.

Karole had a long and dedicated nursing career, including 28 years at the Allergy and Immunology Clinic. After retiring, she continued caring for others through her volunteer work at the Free Clinic.

Karole was also a volunteer extraordinaire. Among her many accomplishments, she helped run the Attic Angels Association jewelry sale for 28 years and the American Girl doll sale for 30 years. She also volunteered with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the American Cancer Society, and the Easter Seals Telethon. She was a proud member of P.E.O. Sisterhood (Philanthropic Educational Organization).

A very active, long-time member of Luther Memorial Church, Karole served as a Communion Assistant, started the church library, supervised Sunday School, and sang in the choir.

Karole loved to travel. With Steve, she took many wonderful trips, and she also traveled with others to Russia, Germany, and other countries throughout Europe.

She was a top-notch bowler, participating in bowling leagues for more than 50 years, and she also enjoyed cross-country skiing.

Karole is survived by her sons, Jeffrey (Mary) and Gregory (Marcia); her five grandchildren, Kira, William, Rachel, Megan, and Jack; her sisters, Karen Lewis, Nancy Mayer, and Phyllis Friedrich; and many devoted friends and family members.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Steve; her parents, John and Emelia Ahsmann; and her brothers, LeRoy Ahsmann, Charles Ahsmann, and John Ahsmann.

Karole’s family extends heartfelt thanks to the special family members, friends, and neighbors who offered help, comfort, and support during this difficult time.
