Karen Ellen Cornell, age 83, of Stoughton entered eternal life on June 14, 2025. She was born on December 19, 1941, in Milwaukee to Dewey Plaumann and Catherine (Heimann) Schwamb. Karen was brought into God’s family through Holy Baptism at Grace Ev Church on February 22, 1942. On March 25, 1956, she confessed her faith in the triune God and was confirmed at Siloah Lutheran Church.
On October 5, 1966, she was joined in marriage to John Cornell. Their life as Christian husband and wife was blessed with more than fifty-two years together and the gift of three children: John Jr., Jeffrey, and Kari. Together John and Karen built a strong foundation for their family—one rooted in love, faith, and devotion.
She spent most of her working years in health insurance, retiring from WPS, and also enjoyed many years working in customer service at Kohl’s Department Store.
Karen treasured being surrounded by her family and making moments spent together special. Countless hours were devoted to providing her children with a Christian education, spending numerous hours on the road bringing them to and from school and supporting their participation in school activities. Karen often volunteered her time at church, where she joyfully served in many roles. She led the Lutheran Girl Pioneers, sang in the church choir, was an active member of the Ladies Aid, and generously shared her delicious homemade treats at countless gatherings. She enjoyed doing for others throughout her earthly life. Her faith, service, and warmth enriched the lives of all who knew her.
Karen is survived by her children John Jr. (Bonnie) Cornell, Jeffrey Cornell, and Kari Potkay; granddaughter Ashley Cornell; grand pups Malaki and Gracie; brothers-in-law Tom, Mike (Jean), Richard (Joan), and sister-in-law Renee; nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John; father, Dewey Plaumann; mother, Catherine Schwamb; sisters, Jean Ann Phillips and Donna Rae; also, son-in-law, Peter Potkay.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at St Peter’s Lutheran Church, 1708 W. 6th Ave., Broadhead, WI. with Rev. Tyler Swiderski presiding. A luncheon will follow the service, and burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery South in Stoughton. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until the funeral at the church on Saturday.
