Kalman Kunin

Kalman C. Kunin, age 93, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2013 at Agrace HospiceCare. He was born on June 9, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York to Alex and Clara (Schneiderman) Kunin.

Dr. Kunin attended McGill University from 1936-1943 and earned Bachelor of Science (B.Sc .), Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery (M.D., C.M.) degrees, becoming a Medical Doctor at the age of 22. He volunteered for the U.S. Naval Reserve in early 1941 and was ordered to active duty with the U.S. Navy in November 1943. Dr. Kunin's active duty included serving as a medical officer on an LST during the Normandy Invasion, where he managed an aid station on Omaha Beach on D-Day. While serving in Boston he was fortunate to be introduced to Roberta "Bobbie" Shine who became the love of his life. They were married on December 9, 1945, while he was on leave from his duty station at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where he was assigned as a surgeon for a period of 16 months. After leaving the service, Dr. Kunin had an active OB/Gyn practice in Youngstown, OH, for 37 years. Dr. Kunin was proud to be the Medical Director of the Youngstown affiliate of Planned Parenthood for over 25 years.

At the age of 42, Dr. Kunin earned a private pilot license and subsequently obtained instrument, multiengine and commercial ratings. He loved to sing and was a member of the choir at Temple Beth El.

Dr. Kunin is survived by his wife, Roberta Kunin; his children: Jay (Gabrielle) Kunin of San Diego, CA, Dale (Les Goldsmith) Kunin of Verona, and Richard (Dusty) Kunin of Boston, MA; and his grandchildren: Joshua (Laurence Noisette) Kunin-Goldsmith of Washington D.C., Noah (Stephanie Judge) Kunin-Goldsmith of Madison, Seth Kunin-Goldsmith of Dallas, TX, Lauren Kunin of San Francisco, CA, and Heather Kunin of Boston, MA.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. TODAY, Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at TEMPLE BETH EL, 2702 Arbor Drive, Madison with Rabbi Johathan Biatch officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
