Jules Newman

November 27, 1925 — November 26, 2015

MADISON - Jules Newman passed away peacefully at BrightStar Senior Living on Thursday, Nov. 26, one day short of his 90th birthday.
Born in Chicago on Nov. 27, 1925, he was the son of Joshua Samuel "Sam" and Elaine (Grundwag) Newman and grew up on the south side.
After graduating from Hyde Park High School, Jules served in the Army during WWII and was stationed around the U.S. After the war, he received a bachelor's degree from Roosevelt University, Chicago, and a master's degree from Northwestern University, Evanston. He taught in Chicago public schools for several years, mainly seventh and eighth grades at Joyce Kilmer Elementary School, and earned a principal's certificate in 1962. He served as principal at Walter Reed, George Manierre and Hamilton elementary schools until his retirement.

Jules married Lorraine Greenband in 1956 and they lived in Rogers Park for nearly 40 years where they raised their children, Judy and Joel. They moved to Scottsdale, Ariz. in 1995 and came to the Madison area in 2005. Together, they enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada, and overseas.
When he retired, Jules followed his passion for art and took classes in Evanston and in Arizona. His paintings grace the walls of his home and his children's homes. He is known for his voracious appetite, his infinite interest in all people and in the world, and his hearty laughter. His zest for life never diminished.

Jules is survived by his children, Judy Newman Coburn and Joel Newman; daughter-in-law Jennifer; grandchildren Danny, Sara and Liora; his sister Sally Fohrman; niece Elizabeth (Richard) Zorowitz and grand-nephews, Edward and Ben.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lorraine; and son-in-law George Coburn.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, at 1 p.m. at TEMPLE BETH EL, 2702 Arbor Drive, Madison, WI 53711, with Rabbi Jonathan Biatch presiding. Burial will follow at Beit Olamim Jewish Cemetery at Sunset Memory Gardens in Madison.

Memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare or Jewish Social Services, Madison. The family is so deeply grateful for the unprecedented, outstanding care Jules received from Dr. Alexis Eastman, from Robyn Shearer and the staff at BrightStar and from the staff at Agrace.
