MADISON - Joyce Brink, age 97, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2015 at Attic Angels in Middleton, WI. Born on January 31, 1918 in Niagara Falls, Canada to Jonathon Fredrick and Nellie Bertha (Kemp) Hickling, she was the eldest of 3 children. Joyce was a 1940 graduate of the Toronto General Hospital School of Nursing.
After graduating, she quickly rose through the ranks to become the head nurse at Toronto General Hospital, Emergency Department. Joyce continued her education and graduated with a degree in Public Health in 1949 from the University of Toronto, Canada. She joined the supervisory staff of the National Canadian Institute for the Blind specializing in sight saving and prevention of blindness. In 1963, Joyce married Dr. Royal Alexander Brink; Professor and Head of the Genetics Department at the University of Wisconsin. Though Joyce and Alexander spent decades in Madison, they also spent a great deal of time traveling the world.
Joyce is survived by her brother, Dr. Clifford Hickling of Russell, Ontario, Canada. Joyce will be remembered by many friends and cousins, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alexander; brother, James Hickling and sisters in law Ruth (Smith) and Margaret (Victoria) Hickling.
A Memorial Gathering will be announced at a later date, at Attic Angels, 8301 Old Sauk Rd., Middleton, WI. Joyce will be inurned at Spring Hill Cemetery in Metcalfe, Ontario, Canada later this year. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a charity of donor's choice or to Attic Angels Fund, Employee Fund, or Resident Fund. Please share your memories at
