Joseph R. Grout, 95, devoted husband and beloved patriarch, died September 26 at Agrace Hospice Care center.
Joseph was born October 30, 1916, in Denver, Colorado, where he finished his schooling, began his career, helped build the family cabin with his father, and first met Rosemary, his loving wife of 73 years. During World War II, he enlisted in the Army, leaving three young boys and his wife at home, and served as a navigator in the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific. He returned safely to his family, expanded it (to ten children), and worked as a mining and mechanical engineer for Mine & Smelter Supply (Denver), Allis Chalmers (Milwaukee), and Warman International or Madison, where he lived the remainder of his years.
Joseph enjoyed woodworking and home remodeling, and taught himself computer programming, which he used to create a digital family genealogy, completing research begun by his own father. He enjoyed his travels abroad with work and later as a member of the Madison Diocesan Choir. A man of deep faith, he was a loyal member of Queen of Peace parish and spent his last years living independently at All Saints Retirement Center with Rosemary.
Joe "Papa" Grout lived his life with honor, integrity, and patient love. He made the world a better place for all. Special thanks to his wonderful caretakers of Agrace Hospice Care and Home Health United, especially Mary, Lisa and Heather. Memorial gifts may be made to Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish.
Joseph was a devoted husband to Rosemary, a loving brother, uncle, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by Rosemary, his ten children: Paul (Jan) of Texas; Jim of Colorado; Jerry (Ann) of North Carolina, Teresa of Arizona; Carol (Kent) of North Carolina; Steve (Donna) of Montana; Mary (Alan) of Middleton; Donna (Jerry) of Verona; Dan (fiance Melissa) of California; and Bill (Mary) of Madison. He also leaves behind 16 proud grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, sister Virginia, brother Bill and many adoring nieces and nephews in Denver.
