Obituary

John Francis Sullivan passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family and a lifetime of treasured memories on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

Born on August 20, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, to John and Margaret Sullivan, John lived a life defined by faith, family, service, and generosity. He graduated from Austin High School in 1955 and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force Air National Guard.

On July 9, 1960, John married the love of his life, the former Barbara Doty, in Chicago. Together they built a beautiful life in Middleton, raising a close-knit family and creating decades of wonderful memories together.

John enjoyed a distinguished 30-year career with CUNA Mutual Insurance, where his hard work, leadership, and dedication led him to become Senior Vice President of the International Division before his retirement.

A man of deep faith and community spirit, John was a longtime member of the Elks Club and Knights of Columbus. He also gave generously of his time volunteering with St. Vincent de Paul, Luke House, and Meals on Wheels, always eager to help others and brighten someone’s day.

He loved golfing at The Bridges, traveling the world—with Ireland holding a special place in his heart— reading a good book with a cigar, eating ice cream and gathering with family whenever possible. Nothing brought him more pride or joy than being “Papa.” Whether at a game, school play, musical, or celebration, John could always be found cheering on his grandchildren with a smile on his face and pride in his heart.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Elizabeth Sullivan, Jennifer (Todd) Lewis, and Matthew (Adrienne) Sullivan; his cherished grandchildren, Shane (Kelsey) Lewis, Patrick Lewis, Aidan Lewis, Liam Sullivan, and Louise Sullivan; and his adored great-grandchildren, Laelia and Kaia Lewis. He is further survived by many other relatives, dear friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know his warmth, humor, and kindness.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara; his parents; and his brother, Eugene.

A celebration of John’s life will begin with a visitation on Thursday, May 21, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. at Cress Center, 6021 University Avenue. Visitation will continue on Friday, May 22, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 602 Everglade Drive, from 10:00 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John’s name to Agrace Hospice, Middleton Public Library, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
