John Michael “Mike” Shannahan

Fitchburg- John Michael "Mike" Shannahan, age 82, passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2025 at his residence. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 1, 1942, the son of Jack and Olive Shannahan. 

Mike graduated from Rolla H.S. in Rolla, Missouri. He received his undergraduate degree and medical degree from the University of Missouri. Mike completed his residency at UW-Madison in general surgery and his fellowship in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. He worked at St. Mary's hospital and Dean Clinic for 30 years.

Mike enjoyed training his black labs to compete in field trials, enjoyed the outdoors hunting and fishing, traveling, and cheering on Badger sports as a season ticket holder.

Mike is survived by three sons, Sean (Jerilyn), Jon-Paul (Annie), and Patrick (Natalie); six grandchildren; and sister, Elizabeth Redmond. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Patricia; and nephew, Beau Gregory Hogan.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 19, 2025 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 401 S. Owen Drive, Madison, with Fr. Jay Poster officiating. Friends may greet the family from 10:00 AMuntil the time of services Thursday at church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Association, Breakthrough TID, or Ducks Unlimited.
