John Johnson

May 9, 1928 — April 2, 2018

MADISON - John E. Johnson, age 89, passed away at St. Mary's Care Center in Madison on Monday, April 2, 2018. John was born to John Johnson and Inga Skaaret Johnson in Portage and grew up in Poynette where he met his high school sweetheart, June Stebbins, of Columbus.

June told him it was time to get married, and on Valentines day in 1948, John gave her a ring. They got married April 19, 1949 in Poynette, and then moved to Beaver Dam. John joined the Air Force in December of 1951 and did basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. June went home to her parents while he was in basic training. He then went to teletype school in Cheyenne, WY. June joined him there while they were expecting their first baby. John then went to Donaldson AFB in SC to get ready to go overseas from May to October. Sadly, little David Elwin was stillborn. The funeral for the baby was across from Bob Jones University. John later went to Germany and June once again returned home.

After returning from overseas, John and June were in Sacramento, CA for one and a half years where they got saved at a Billy Graham Crusade. June was in the choir and John was ushering on the other side of the building at the crusade. Neither of them knew of the other professing salvation.

December 5, 1955, John left the service and the couple returned to Poynette. John learned the plumbing trade and worked at it for 20 years. They moved to Park Circle in Middleton in 1967. He then worked with the Middleton Park Department for 18 years. They were licensed as foster parents, then adopted Christine and Jayne.

John and June have been active members at Middleton Baptist Church, Calvary Baptist Church in Sun Prairie, and Waunakee Baptist Church. In 2015 they went back to Middleton to The Jefferson on Old Sauk Rd., where they attended church, partied all the time, and made new friends.

John is survived by his wife June Johnson of Madison; Daughters Jayne Brown of Arizona and Christine Johnson of Madison; Granddaughters Jessica and Jeannine; and Grandson Richaard.
