John A. Hanson, age 80, passed away August 31st, 2026 at a medical facility in Middleton, Wisconsin after a long illness. He was born October 23, 1945 in Madison to the late Bart and Lucille (Pierce) Hanson.

John worked for the state of Wisconsin in the department of corrections for 34 plus years before retiring in 2001. He loved watching and playing sports of all kinds. He especially loved watching baseball, the Brewers, NASCAR, the Packers and Badgers. He was an avid golfer, bowler and Madison city league fastpitch softball player.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jerran Hanson and former wife, Jamaeie Meinhardt. He is survived by his sister, Beverly Block; sister-in-law, Alice Hanson; nephews and niece, Greg Hanson, Lisa (Gerry) Roche, Dave Hanson, Jay (Vicki) Hanson; and 2 great-nephews and 3 great-nieces. A celebration of life and visitation will be held Saturday, October 3rd, 2026 at Cress Funeral Home 3610 Speedway Road Madison from 11:00am-12:00pm. Inurnment to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison.
