Madison - John Rogers Evans, age 78, passed away on October 15, 2026.

John was born on September 23, 1948, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He graduated from Tremper High School, where he was a member of the swim team. He later graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a BBA '70, and from the Wisconsin Law School with a J.D. '76.

John devoted his career to the practice of law and served as Chief Counsel for the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. Following a distinguished career in public service, he retired in 2014.

Throughout his life, John remained actively involved in his community. He served on the board of the UW-Madison Geology Museum, the Badger Dolphins Swim Team, and Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. He was also a member of Parkcrest Swim & Tennis Club and the Wisconsin Hoofers. John enjoyed golfing, traveling, and supporting UW athletics.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Kathy Evans; his wife, Deborah Rychlowski; and his son, John Gilbert Evans.

He is survived by his children, Anne, Jane, William, James, and Mary; extended family members; and many friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, dedication, and friendship.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 602 Everglade Drive, Madison, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John's memory to the Hamel Music Center Fund at the UW Mead Witter School of Music.
