John Delany passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on September 18, 2026. He was born on January 2, 1942, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Frank and Elizabeth Delany.

John was a member of the first graduating class of the newly established Wahlert High School in Dubuque, where he was honored for his accomplishments. He went on to graduate from UW-Platteville. It was during his time at UW-Platteville that John met the love of his life, Patricia. On June 26, 1966, they began their life together as husband and wife in Madison and built their family.

John was athletic throughout his life. In high school, he played both basketball and baseball. He became a legend at Wahlert after making a half-court shot at the end of a game to secure a victory for his team. He also followed in his brother's footsteps in the baseball world, earning the nickname “Fingers.” John loved running and completed many marathons over the years, including the Syttende Mai Run several times and the Boston Marathon twice.

Baseball remained a passion throughout John's life. He traveled to Atlanta, Cincinnati, and many other cities to watch games and enjoy the sport he loved. He also spent many years as an umpire for various leag608-238-3434ues. Even after retiring from umpiring, John was once called back into service when an umpire was needed for one of Patrick's games.

John was also a talented and passionate woodworker. He remodeled the cabinets in the family home, built an entire addition, and created a gazebo for Patrick and another for himself. His craftsmanship can be found throughout the homes of his family, including furniture he lovingly built for those he cared about.

John took great pride in his career and in the work he accomplished. His work was innovative and had an impact far beyond his own workplace. He designed and patented an air filtration system for floral coolers that are used around the world. He retired from Research Products Corporation as Director of Engineering.

Above all, family was incredibly important to John, and he was equally important to his family. In his final days, Claudia and Patrick stayed with him so that he could remain in his home. Claudia was his main caregiver toward the end, surrounding him with love, comfort, and care.

John is survived by his sons, Brian Delany and Patrick (Claudia) Delany; granddaughter, Leara Delany; sister, Katherine Breitbach; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 25 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 401 Owen Dr., from 10-11am. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am.
