John C. Brogaard, 83, Verona, WI, was called to his eternal home on February 11, 2024 at Oakwood Village nursing home in Madison, Wisconsin. John was born to Fred and Caroline (Hegarty) Brogaard on Sept. 9, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois.
John spent his early years in Chicago before his family moved to Fremont, Wisconsin. He graduated from Weyauwega high school and then enlisted in the Army, serving four years. John felt God’s calling to enter the ministry for which he attended St. John’s Junior College in Winfield, Kansas and Fort Wayne Bible College in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He earned his Master of Divinity in 1970 at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. While at the seminary, John met Jean Pfitzer, the daughter of one of his professors, and they were married on June 8, 1968.
John was called to preach and teach God’s word in many congregations. He served a vicarage in Puyallup, Washington, and was a pastor at churches in Kansas, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. His practical approach to helping those in need and reassuring demeanor led to his appointment as circuit counselor while in Nebraska, where he provided guidance and support to fellow pastors and congregations.
He was a competitive tennis player, active in many leagues well into his 70s. John loved to fish, hunt, and be outdoors. He retired from the ministry in 2006 after serving at Grace Lutheran in Omro, Wisconsin for ten years. In 2012, he and Jean settled in Verona.
Married 55 years, John is survived by son Andrew of Madison, daughter Kristin Brogaard, her husband David Sherman and their daughter Telia of Nashville, Tennessee. He is also survived by siblings Caroline (Brogaard) Behnke of Chilton, Wisconsin, Allen and JoNette Brogaard of Alexandria, Minnesota, Christ and Pat Brogaard of Waupaca, Wisconsin, and Sue Brogaard of Prescott, Arizona, as well as many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jean, infant son Daniel, two siblings Fred Brogaard and Dorothy (Brogaard) Flores, and his in-laws.
A committal service will be held at Lakeside Cemetery in Fremont, WI this spring.
John faithfully served the Lord throughout his life, and if you wish to honor him with a memorial it can be made to the Lutheran Hour Ministries or a charity of your choice.
John’s life reminds us of his firm faith and commitment in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to the very end. While we look forward to seeing him again one day, we are comforted knowing that he and Jean are together with family and praising God in heaven.
Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.” John 11:25-26 NKJV
