Jim Spahn, age 90, passed away peacefully with his children by his side on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
He was born on November 10, 1935, to Joseph & Agnes (Keller) Spahn. On June 7, 1958, Jim was united in marriage to Mary Ann Rortvedt. Together they built a life full of love and devotion until her passing on May 16, 2021.
Following in the footsteps of his mentor, Coach Dick Trotta, Jim became a mentor to all who knew him—especially his family. The MVP of the championship-winning 1953 Waunakee Football Team, Jim’s greatest victory was the love and leadership he gave to his family, who will always honor him as their true life MVP.
After graduating high school, Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning home, he and his brother, Stan, founded Spahn Brothers. Following the end of that partnership in 1977, Jim owned and operated Jim Spahn Construction from 1978 until his well-earned retirement in 2000.
Outside of work, Jim was an avid golfer—proudly celebrating a hole-in-one— A dedicated Wisconsin sports fan, he cheered for the Packers, Badgers, and Brewers. He never missed an opportunity to attend his kids', grandkids', and great-grandkids' events.
Jim is survived by his children: Betsy (Dave) Buechner, Greg (Jenny) Spahn, Bill Spahn, and Cheryl (Lindsay) Carlson; his grandchildren: Kevin (Patti), Megan (Craig), Michelle (Justin), Jacob, Rachel, Kayla, Ashley, and Tony (Becca); 12 great-grandchildren; his sister, Jane Kaltenberg; and many other relatives and dear friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann; parents, Joseph & Agnes; sister, Doris Ripp; brothers, Stan and David; and parents-in-law Marvin & Pauline Rortvedt.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church, 209 South St., Waunakee. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will take place in the church cemetery with full military honors.
