Gerald Henry "Jerry" Derr September 16, 1943 – November 1, 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald Henry Derr, known to many as Jerry, on November 1, 2024. Jerry was a beloved husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and dear friend. A patriot, public servant, and community advocate, Jerry embodied a life of dedication, hard work, and integrity.

Born the eldest of ten siblings on September 16, 1943, Jerry grew up in a family committed to public service. His father, Leroy Derr, had served on the Town of Bristol board, a legacy that inspired Jerry’s own journey of service. In 1967, following the passing of his father, Jerry took on family responsibilities, running the family farm in Bristol. His civic path continued with his appointment to the Town of Bristol board in 1978. In 1981, following the passing of the then-chairman, Jerry was appointed to the role and continued to serve as chairman, holding this position through re-elections until his passing. Throughout his decades of service, Jerry championed local government and town representation, ensuring that towns had a voice in regional planning and development.

On October 26, 1961, Jerry married his high school sweetheart, Elaine, beginning a lifelong journey together. Side by side, they navigated life’s joys and challenges, creating a strong, loving partnership that would last 61 years.

Whenever the township was short-staffed, Jerry would step in himself, often plowing snow to keep roads safe and clear. Known for his dedication to protecting the town’s resources, he worked tirelessly to ensure that Bristol’s needs were met responsibly, building a reputation for wise and sensible spending.

Jerry served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves with the 139th Engineers from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, enlisting through the buddy program with his lifelong friend, Gary Cripps. This sense of duty to both country and community remained central to his life.

Beyond Bristol, Jerry’s dedication extended across Wisconsin, leaving a lasting impact on community and state policies. Appointed by Governor Tommy Thompson, he served as Chairman of the Board for the Wisconsin Conservation Corps until the program’s conclusion. He was also a leader in the Wisconsin Towns Association and the Dane County Towns Association (DCTA), where he served as President, shaping initiatives that empowered towns statewide. In addition to serving on the board of Wisconsin County Mutual, Jerry was involved with other insurance boards supporting Wisconsin municipalities, furthering his lifelong commitment to local advocacy and service.

A lifelong outdoorsman, Jerry loved hunting, especially deer hunting, and fishing, with favorite trips to Canada, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Wisconsin’s trout streams. He was a proud, lifelong member of the Dane County Conservation League, dedicated to preserving the natural resources he so greatly enjoyed. His commitment to family was equally strong. He never missed an event his grandchildren were involved in, whether it was a Christmas program with Sam, Emily, or Jenna or Henry’s soccer games. His presence and support were constants in their lives.

In his final days, Jerry was surrounded by a close circle of friends, including Don, Joanne and Jerry Tierney, and Steve Knaus, who advocated tirelessly for his care and comfort. Jerry expressed his deep gratitude for their support, yet he made it clear to those around him that he accepted if it was his time. His only concern was for his family and friends, ensuring they knew he was at peace. His resilience and strength were constants, a testament to the life he led and the values he upheld.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Marion (née Feuling) Derr; his brother, Larry; his sister, Mary Crombie; and his brother, Alan.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; his four children, Christine of Marina, CA; Jeffrey of Chimacum, WA; Stephanie (John) Rohde of Brown Deer, WI; and Brian (Britt Kinder) of Madison, WI; his four beloved grandchildren, Jenna, Sam, Emily, and Henry; and his siblings, Frederick (Nina), James, Carol (Don), Gary (Julie), Thomas, Michael (Karen), and Annette.

Jerry Derr was a pillar of his community, a friend to many, and a model of integrity. His legacy lives on through his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched. As we remember his life, we carry forward his dedication, his commitment to service, and his belief in doing what is right.

A private burial with close family and friends is planned.  A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held on Sunday, December 8th, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Bristol Town Hall, 7747 County Hwy N, Sun Prairie, WI 53590—a simple gathering to share stories, support one another, and remember the lasting impact he had on everyone who knew him. There’ll be plenty to eat, including some of his BBQ favorites. Cards will be provided for those who’d like to play a round of sheepshead or poker, in true Jerry fashion. Stories and memories are welcome throughout the afternoon, with a designated time at 2:30 p.m. for those wishing to share tributes and reflections.
