Jerald Hanson

March 8, 1928 — February 20, 2016

Stoughton - Jerald Wesley Hanson, age 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born on March 8, 1928 in Edgerton, Wisconsin, the son of John "Wesley" and Julia (Olson) Hanson. He married Dorothy Mae Brandenburg on May 10, 1952 at Luther Valley Lutheran Church in Beloit. Jerald and Dorothy were married for over 63 years, raising three sons Jeff, Phil, and Stu.

Upon graduating from Edgerton High School, Jay enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country honorably during W.W.II. Jay graduated from Milton College with a Bachelor's of Science Degree and continued his education earning his CPCU designation. Jay had a long career in the insurance industry, retiring from American Family in 1990 as the Underwriting Director for Research and Control. He was an avid hunter and sportsmen, teaching his three sons the secrets of how to hunt and fish. On early morning hunts, Jay would often awake his boys by yelling out, "day light in the swamp!". His favorite hunting dog was the Black Lab. He raised many! They all had one thing in common, they were all named "Mike". He had a passion for wood carving which he enjoyed for over 45 years.

Jay is survived by his wife Dorothy Hanson; sons, Jeff (Holly), Phil, Stu (Karen); 3 grandsons, Elliot, Isaac, and Justin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Gwenith Fenton.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Cress Funeral Home, 206 W. Prospect, Stoughton. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of services on Wednesday. Jay will be laid to rest at Lutheran Cemetery South.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at St.Mary's and Stoughton Hospitals as well as Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care. A very special thank you to Gary, Berly and Brody Teigen for all the friendship and help provided to our parents for so many years!
