Jennie Lou Cowan, 68, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, leaving behind a family who loved her deeply and a world that feels a little less joyful without her in it.
Jennie was born on October 8, 1956, to Lenore and Adolph "Jack" Huyvaert in Chicago. From the start, she brought warmth, endless energy, and a quiet strength that would come to define her life.
Jennie was the proud mother of Erin Lenore Cowan and the devoted grandmother to her greatest joy, Lyla Grace. Being “Grandma” was the role she cherished above all others. She cherished Lyla deeply, and the two shared a connection filled with giggles, gentle wisdom, and the special closeness only a grandmother and granddaughter can have.
For nearly 40 years, Jennie was married to Michael “Mike” Cowan, with whom she shared the gift of raising Erin in Stockton, Illinois. Over the years, Mike and Jennie owned several businesses in the Stockton community, including publishing the weekly newspaper, “The Scoop Today.” Together, they built many treasured friendships throughout Northwest Illinois. Although their paths eventually diverged, the family they built remained at the center of Jennie’s heart.
One of Jennie’s lifelong passions was tennis. She loved the game for its challenge, its energy, and the joy it brought her, especially when shared with someone special.
Jennie was known for her quick wit and infectious laugh. She had a gift for bringing humor into the everyday. She loved puzzles, card games, and good conversation, and brought a competitive spark to everything she did.
Most of all, Jennie loved the Lord. Her faith was the foundation of her life. She lived with humility, kindness, and a quiet strength that made those around her feel safe and loved.
Jennie leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and faith. She will be dearly missed by her daughter Erin, her granddaughter Lyla, sister Cathy, and her former husband Mike, along with all who had the joy of knowing her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Redeemer City Church in Fitchburg on Sunday, June 29 at 1:30 PM. All who knew and loved Jennie are warmly invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, a tuition fund has been established for Lyla’s Christian schooling, a meaningful way to honor Jennie’s deep faith and her devotion to her granddaughter’s future.
