Jeffrey Milton Schroeter of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away on September 19, 2026, at the age of 72. He was born on September 25, 1953, in Monroe, Wisconsin, the son of Milt Schroeter and Lois Jane Schroeter. He married Gail Thompson on June 15, 1974, in Stoughton, Wisconsin, with whom he enjoyed 52 years of marriage, love, and family.
Jeff was a kind, fun-loving man, selfless and full of energy, who spent most of his 72 years connecting people and supporting his family and community. He seemingly knew everyone and brought joy to all around him, inspiring others and leaving a profound impact on this world.
After graduating from Stoughton High School in 1971, Jeff worked at Madison Newspapers for 43 years, during which he became a loving father to daughters Beth and Erica. He later went on to work at Metcalfe’s where he became known as the “VIP Commander,” leading the annual Brat Fest for 10 years and elevating the beloved event to new heights. His generosity and involvement in the community also extended to volunteer work, serving on the board of directors at REACH-A-Child and working with Ronald McDonald House and Crime Stoppers.
Jeff always liked to stay busy and was a man of many interests over the years. In his younger days, Jeff played tennis, racquetball, bowling, softball, and volleyball. More recently, he enjoyed fishing trips, golfing, smoking meats, long car rides, wine & cigars on the deck, Frank Sinatra-era music, and all things Badgers and Packers.
Jeff is survived by his wife, Gail Schroeter; his children, Elizabeth Schroeter and Erica (David) Weishoff; and his three grandchildren - Oscar, Adelynn, and Alexander. He is also survived by his sister, Janelle (Bob) Pasch and brother John (Rose) Schroeter, as well as many nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
He is proceeded in death by Milton Schroeter, Lois Jane Schroeter, Herbert & Harriet Swendsen, Milt & Catherine Schroeter, and many close friends.
A celebration of life will be held in the spring. Details will be shared on Jeff’s Facebook page. Cress Funeral Home is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Jeff’s memory to REACH-A-Child (reachachild.org).
