Madison
Jean D. Brickson, age 98, died on February 6, 2016. Jean was born on March 30, 1917 in Manhattan, Kansas, the only daughter of Frances and Aaron DeYoung. She was a graduate of Kansas State University. Jean taught home economics in Wilson, KS and served as Program Coordinator for the Seattle YWCA before moving to New York to work with the Industrial Division of the USO during WWII, establishing community services for families of those employed in war industries. She moved to Madison, WI to become the first director of the University of Wisconsin YWCA (now the YWCA Madison). She was an accomplished cook, knitter, sewer and rosemaling painter and a life-long member of P.E.O. Jean and her husband, Donald Y. Brickson met in Madison. It was their home for over 30 years, where they raised a family and made many friends. In 1981 they moved to Sun City, AZ and Don died there in 1994. Jean returned to Madison and made a home at Oakwood Village West. Her family is very grateful to the staff at Tabor Oaks for the care and friendship they extended to Jean in her last months. Thanks also to everyone on the Agrace Hospice team.
Jean is survived by three daughters: Ann Brickson (Ed Hughes) of Madison, Betty Brickson (Dennis Wentz) of Portland, OR, and Mary Seibel of Oregon, WI. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
There will be no funeral at Jean's request. She leaves us with this wish: "Love, and remember, time flies. So make the most of each special moment and pass on to others what is most important to each of you."
