DeForest - Jay Louis Bucher, 64, passed away on April 18, 2014 at UW Hospital in Madison from complications of multiple brain tumors. He was born on July 10, 1949 to Lyle & Marda Bucher in Pipestone, MN. After his graduation from Pipestone High School in 1967, he attended Minnesota State College followed by Marshal and Pipestone Vocational School.
He briefly worked on the family farm before joining the United States Air Force in 1971. Jay's first assignment was at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY followed by assignments to Utapao-Thailand, Offutt-Nebraska, Yokota-Japan, Kunsan-South Korea, and Misawa-Japan before finally returning back to Yokota as his last duty station before retiring in 1995. Jay spent 19 out of 24 years of his service overseas. After his retirement, Jay moved to Madison, WI to pursue a career in Metrology (the science of measurement). He started his own company in 2008 and published seven books on various aspects of Metrology and calibration programs. He earned his Ph.D. from Almeda University in 2011 and was an active member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), contributing to the establishment of a new certification program for calibration methods. Jay was an avid reader and enjoyed watching movies and thus had a vast collection of novels and movies that he amassed over his lifetime. He also enjoyed traveling and meeting new people from various countries and different cultures.
Jay is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Keiko; his daughter Ayumi of Augusta, GA; twin sister Rebecca Bucher Case of Wasilla, AK; sister Megan Hess of Pipestone, MN and sister in law Dalma Bucher of Woodbury, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald, and nephew Carl Hess.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, April 25, 2014 at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie at 2:00 pm with Celebrant James B. Borlaug officiating. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 12:00 Noon until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made in memory of Jay to the UW Foundation can be given on line at uwhealth.org/iswy to support brain tumor research and/or the American Cancer Society, P.O.
