James Raymond Mayhew, age 80, passed away at Oakwood Village on March 13, 2025, from complications of congestive heart failure. Born on March 12, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Arthur and Virginia (Harreld) Mayhew, Jim was a lifelong academic who earned his Bachelors degree at Washington University. He continued on to a Master's from the University of Missouri and PhD. from Florida State University. Jim worked for Texas A&M University before moving the family north to Madison to work in Adult Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He spent the last 20 years of his career at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee teaching English as a Second Language (ESL).

Jim met his wife, Mary Anne Wilson, at Washington University, marrying in 1967. Together, they had two sons, and opened their home to exchange students and graduate students from around the world. Jim’s passion for science, technology, and education was matched only by his love of family. He enjoyed teaching, conducting science experiments with his grandchildren, jogging, playing softball, and watching baseball, especially as a St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was known for his intellect, humility, and kindness. After Mary Anne’s death in 2015, Jim was devoted to staying active with his grandchildren and maintaining lasting friendships.

Jim is survived by his two sons, Christopher (Jennifer) and David (Courtney), and four grandchildren, Emma, Addison, Wilson, and Clara. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
