Middleton - Early Tuesday morning, August 30, 2016, James Byron Burt Sr. (Jim) passed away in Middleton next to his beloved wife, Susan.
He was born to Dr. Byron and Alcea Burt on November 10, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised in Evanston, Illinois until high school when his family relocated to Wilmette, Illinois.
Jim attended New Trier (class of 1953), where he met his future wife of 61 years, Susan Babcock. They were married in 1955.
Before Jim graduated from the UW in 1957, he was a Chi Psi who became president of The Interfraternity Association and established lifelong friendships.
After college, he became an Air Force pilot rising to the rank of captain. He followed his service with a successful career as a healthcare executive, moving all over the country, after settling in California.
He founded two companies of his own before moving back to Madison in 1992. He was then active in business ventures with Jay Smith and Steve Cole.
Jim served as Chair of the Alumni as well as being a board member of Wisconsin Public Television. He started an endowment for the UW Band, which he loved.
He had a passion for singing, flying, traveling, The Badgers, The Bears, The Cubs, and spending time with his family and friends in the Northwoods at the family cottage in Minocqua.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister (Carole), and his daughter (Cynthia).
Jim is survived by his wife Susan, daughter Penelope (James Munro III), and son James Byron Burt, Jr. He is also survived by grandchildren Rachel Bacon, Amanda and Elizabeth Burt, and James Munro IV.
He leaves a legacy of laughter and love for his family and friends.
Family and friends may visit at Cress Center, 6021 University Ave, Madison on Friday, September 2, 2016 from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. A reception will follow the service in the Cress Center Reception Facility. Jim will be laid to rest at Sunset Memory Gardens.
Jim asked that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the UW Marching Band, Wisconsin Public Television, or The Wounded Warrior Project.
