Jack Mitchell

Jack Mitchell was born in Madison, Wisconsin to Ernest and Anna Mae Mitchell, on April 22, 1938; and transitioned from this life to the next on July 17, 2022.  Jack graduated from Central High School in 1956, where he was an outstanding basketball player for four years. He attended Central State College in Ohio and was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He lived and worked in the city of Chicago as a bus driver in the 60’s and upon his return to Madison in the 70’s he worked as a tradesman. In the 80’s Jack became the facilities manager for 8 buildings, including the Wisconsin Capital and the Governor’s mansion until his retirement in December of 1999.  Jack was a staunch believer in exercising your body, mind and soul. He worked his body by riding his bike, jogging and lifting weights. He was a voracious reader and supporter of the Madison Library on the eastside.  At St. Paul A.M.E. Church; the church his grandfather helped found, Jack was superintendent of the Sunday School as well as a teacher, he worked on the finance committee and helped to support his church in various ways. Jack was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Kwame McDonald, Billy McDonald and his sister Emma Earl. Survivors include Jack’s wife Patricia, his children Sheila Green, Shari Mitchell, Georgia, Jay Mitchell, Michigan & Shauna Mitchell, New York. Grandchildren, Kyneish Osborne, Elon Green, Jacques Moreau, Raechel Green, Aaron Moreau, Charles (Shamoor) McMillon, Alanna Mitchell and Annaya Mitchell and 7 great-grandchildren. Jack’s surviving siblings Carolyn Hargrove and Betty Banks of Madison, Ralph Mitchell (LaMonica), North Carolina, Arlene Grice (Michael) Michigan, and Evette Mitchell, Arizona; as well as a host of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will take place on August 26th with another service at St. Paul A.M.E. to be conducted in the near future.
