Jack F. Naughton

Madison, Wisconsin — Jack Naughton, a beloved father, grandfather, and devoted educator whose life was defined by his kindness and passion for world travel, passed away peacefully at the age of 97.

Born in 1928 in Gary, Indiana, Jack grew up in Chicago before serving two years in the U.S. Navy as a foreign correspondent. Following his service, he dedicated himself to education during his working life and his retirement. For 37 years he was a high school guidance counselor in Beloit and Madison, Wisconsin. For 18 years, he shared his love of nature as a school forest guide. He was known throughout his long career for his deep compassion, humor, and unwavering understanding.

Jack was the devoted husband and soulmate of Elaine Burns for 65 happy years. Married in 1953, they built a beautiful life and family together, marked by an extraordinary spirit of adventure. Their shared passion for teaching took them across the globe, where they taught English seven times in China, as well as in Korea, Poland, Uganda, Mexico, Greece, Spain, Peru, and Ecuador. They were inseparable partners who supported each other throughout their many journeys.

Since 2006, Jack and Elaine were active residents of Oakwood Village, where they shared their editorial talents as co-editors of the Oak Chips newspaper. Jack remained in his independent living apartment until 11 days before his death. Elaine predeceased him in 2018.

Jack is survived by his three children: Valerie (Peter), Jeff (Shirley), and Lisa (Adrian), and six cherished grandchildren. He is also lovingly remembered by his dear companion, Cathy Beyer, with whom he shared comfort and happiness in his final years.
