It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Jack D. Munson, 17, of Sun Prairie, who passed away on Monday, August 24, 2026.
Jack was born on June 30, 2009, in Madison to Dave and Kate (Hurley) Munson. From the very beginning, Jack had a sparkle and mischief in his eyes that his family will never forget. From a young age, Jack loved being outdoors and helping his dad with outdoor projects, often riding alongside Dave on his own little tractor and trailer. As he grew older, that love of working outdoors and with his hands only grew. He took great pride in his work and genuinely enjoyed helping people. Jack embodied the philosophy of work hard, play hard. After a long day, Jack would often come home, sit at the kitchen counter with something to eat, and tell his family about his day. His stories were never simply stories—Jack couldn't tell one without adding voices, impressions, or some sarcastic commentary along the way. His quick wit and playful sarcasm were unmistakably Jack.
Jack was the most social person his family had ever known. He could strike up a conversation with absolutely anyone and loved talking—not just making small talk, but having real conversations. His family still laughs remembering a time when Jack struck up such a great conversation with a furniture salesman that it delayed the family's furniture purchase. That was Jack: genuinely interested in people and able to make a connection wherever he went.
When he wasn't working or spending time with family, Jack loved being with his friends—shopping, hanging out, and finding the next exciting adventure. His time with friends inevitably led to stories and shenanigans that he would later share with his family. They loved hearing those stories and watching the little sparkle in his eyes as he told them, usually followed by his unmistakable laughter.
Jack tried so many things in his short life and found joy in so much. He loved music, snowboarding, working outdoors, helping others, and, most of all, spending time with the people he loved. He also had a love for his trinkets and took great pleasure in rearranging his room after acquiring yet another one.
Jack was fun, funny, adventurous, hardworking, and full of life. He was a gift to his family and to everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed—every second of every day.
Jack is survived by his mom and dad, Dave and Kate Munson; his siblings, Ruby, Wade, and Lucy; his grandparents; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members who loved him dearly.
Jack was preceded in death by his Grandma Donna, who passed away the same day 19 years ago, on August 24, 2007.
A visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Marshall High School, followed by a memorial service at 12:30 p.m.
The family encourages everyone who knew Jack to continue sharing his memories, telling his stories, and remembering him through the laughter and adventures that made him who he was. Keep telling the stories. Keep Jack's sparkle alive.
